They aren't really much louder if properly adjusted. They are somewhat high maintenance (compared to hydraulic, I suppose). Personally I wouldn't run them on the VG due to the amount of work it would take to keep them properly adjusted. If you think about it, even setting them up initially would be a pain. They need to be installed, cold lash adjusted, engine assembled, engine warmed up, then they need to be warm lash adjusted (which means you're taking the upper plenum and valve covers back off) Adjustment interval depends on the engine, some can need it every oil change, some can go 10k-20k without adjustment.
